A new range of David Bowie Coins have been released as part of The Royal Mint’s “Music Legends” collection – There’s even one that was launched into space.
The coin orbited the Earth’s atmosphere (at an altitude of 35,656m (116,982ft)) for 45 minutes before its eventual return, now the very coin is being offered as a prize on the Royal Mint’s Facebook Page.
The new coins celebrate the music icons career, and features a lightning bolt design inspired from ‘Aladdin Sane’, as well as a portrait of Bowie.
The one-ounce coin, can be purchased on the Royal Mint’s website, with options ranging from a £13 uncirculated £5 coin, all the way to a staggering £72,195 for a kilo gold coin in a denomination of £1,000 (of which only 11 gold coins will be minted).
The ‘Aladdin Sane’ lightning bolt design has also uses “the latest innovative technology and manufacturing techniques” to a coin that appears to be laced with stardust to create a glitter effect.
David Bowie is the third recipient of a coin in the “Music Legends” collection, after coins in honour of Queen, and Sir Elton John.
Clare Maclennan, divisional director of commemorative coins at the Royal Mint, said “We are thrilled to unveil the third coin in the Royal Mint’s music legends series, honouring the intergalactic legacy and career of David Bowie.”
Adding “In recognition of Bowie’s first hit single Space Oddity, we felt it was fitting to send his coin into space and celebrate the Starman in his own pioneering fashion.”
“David Bowie’s music has inspired and influenced generations of musicians and we hope this commemorative coin will be cherished by fans around the world.”
