Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has released a video explaining the story behind ‘Everlong’.
The video originally aired as part of Oates Song Fest 7908, and was recorded at Studio 606 in Northridge, CA.
In the video, Dave takes us back to the winter of 1996. Explaining that the band wrote it when they were writing their second album ‘The Color And The Shape’. He says that in the downtime in the studio, while he was waiting to record his parts, he stumbled upon a chord, and thought to himself it sounds like a good ‘Sonic Youth’ chord. Dave admits that since he wasn’t a trained musician, he has no idea what that chord was.
Dave then found a second chord close to the first. He then realised that he could move it around on the guitar. Dave messed around with the idea between takes. At the time he was going through a break-up, which meant when he wrote the lyrics “they came from a real place”.
Now Dave had the idea for the song, he wanted to record it so he didn’t forget it. So he got in touch with his friend Jeff Turner, to ask if he could record a little demo in his studio. Dave then put all the parts together (Drums, Guitar, and vocals), and the song started to make sense.
