Megadeth guitarist and vocalist Dave Mustaine has confirmed that the band’s new album is almost completed, saying he has just “one song left to sing”.
Speaking about the album, on his Gimme Radio show, Mustaine commented, “Thankfully, my partner is coming back out to Nashville, and we’re gonna be commencing on some guitar tracks and solos and some ear candy to wrap all that up.”
“We’ve got probably about another… I’ve got one song left to sing, and then another song I’ve got one sentence that I’ve gotta finish.”
“Other than that, all the vocals are done on this record, and it’ll be time to focus now on background vocals and the remaining stuff with solos and, as we say… I know I’ve said it so many times — ‘ear candy.'”
“For you guys that don’t know what that is, it’s just what it sounds like — it’s sticky, sappy, syrupy crap people put on records that help to — I don’t know — make the song sound better. When you’re thinking about AC/DC, you don’t usually think about percussion.”
Previously Dave teased a new song, and gave a potential album title to the follow-up to 2016’s ‘Dystopia’. In a clip posted to Reddit from a live Q&A with the band, the frontman revealed that the band’s working title for their next album is ‘The Sick, The Dying, And The Dead’. However, Dave also stated that the title “may change”, stating “there’s some other titles, and I usually change the titles four or five times before I settle on anything.”
The frontman also went on to share a brief snippet of a song from the upcoming album, check it out down below.
☢️⚠️Attention all MEGADETH fans⚠️☢️ Today during a Live Q&A with Dave Mustaine, I managed to get Mr Mustaine to olay a very short tease if the new upcoming Album….Enjoy🤟🏽 from r/Megadeth
Dave has previously stated that album number 16 ranks within the top five of Megadeth’s discography. “I think this is probably in the top four records as far as towards the tip of the spear with our career and everything that we’re doing,” Enthuses Dave. “It’s up there with Countdown [To Extinction], Rust In Peace and probably Peace Sells. The other one I would say is Dystopia. So that would round up my top five.”
Mustaine also revealed that Megadeth had come up with 15 original songs in the studio, before deciding to throw in a couple of covers as well.
“We got to the end, and I said, ‘Shoot, we didn’t think about the cover songs, man,’” he said. “We had a couple of songs we wanted to do for this record. ‘Damn, we forgot. What are we gonna do? Do you wanna still talk about it?’ ‘Yeah, we wanna talk about it.’”
“So we ended up doing 18 songs altogether, and then we had another song that we forgot was part of one of the other songs, so we had 19. [We] ditched one of the cover songs, so now we’ve got an 18-song album that we’re gonna be bringing.”
