Salem have returned with their second EP titled ‘Salem II’. The band made quite the impact when their first EP dropped back in 2020 and fans have been eagerly anticipating the release of new music from Will Gould’s side project. This should be a lot of fun to jump into so without any further delay, here are my thoughts on Salem’s ‘Salem II’.
The EP kicks off with the track ‘William, It Was Really Something’. Will Gould’s unique vocals are present right off the bat. His more theatrical style of singing adds a lot to the track as it’s able to highlight the powerful melody being created behind him. In a more punky turn of events, the single ‘DRACULADS’ comes storming in with a catchy chord progression and one contagious groove. The song uses contrast exceptionally well by seamlessly changing from the high paced riffs to a more melodically focused rhythm section. Very strong start to the band’s second release.
Following that is the charismatic ‘Keep The Thorns’. Will can put alot of character into each song he performed just by his vocal delivery alone. This track is a shining example of just how much passion he puts into his tracks and it’s clear to see just how vital his voice is to his music.
The penultimate song is ‘Sweet Tooth’, a track that took a bit of getting used to for me but I ended up enjoying it a lot. The song is just a collaboration of simple beats and phrases however, that’s part of what makes the song such fun to listen to. It doesn’t try to be anything it’s not and gets right to the point. Finishing off the record is the highly energetic ‘Heaven Help Me’. A track that boasts one of the catchiest instrumentals I’ve heard from the band. It’s one of those tracks that just makes you bob your head along to it no matter what. A really strong end to the EP!
Salem may not be everyone’s cup of tea, however, if you’re into more theatrical styled vocals then I highly recommend checking out this EP. Will Gould continues to impress me with the sheer level of passion he puts into both Creeper and Salem. I think the future is very bright for the young English singer. I cannot wait to catch Salem out on tour later this year.
