Album Review: Myles Kennedy – The Ides of March

Myles Kennedy is back with his solo album titled ‘The Ides of March’. The Alter Bridge frontman may be one of the hottest commodities in rock and metal at this current time, so it goes without saying that the hype around this release is astounding. I’ve been looking forward to this one for a while now so without any further delay, here are my thoughts on Myles Kennedy’s ‘The Ides of March’

The album opens up with the emphatic ‘Get Along’. Straight off the bat you’re made aware that this isn’t going to be any standard album. Heavy riffs and melodic charm rings throughout the entire track and Myles Kennedy’s iconic vocals really bring the song to life. A powerful track with an infectious groove to kick off his new album! Following that, is the groovy ‘ A Thousand Words’. An awesome syncopated beat really keeps the song feeling like a lot of fun. Not to mention the more intricate guitar styling featured throughout. A great start to the new record!

Chugging distortion and a country esc twang is how you are introduced to the track ‘In Stride’. It’s a more unique track than what you’d expect from Myles Kennedy, however it works extremely well with his powerful vocal prowess. The track boasts some of the best riffs on the whole album so I’d definitely recommend this one.

Changing it up once again, ‘The Ides of March’ is one unusual track. From the acoustic intro to a guitar progression that wouldn’t feel out of place in Hawaii, the song manages to keep you captivated for the entire duration which comes in at over 7 minutes long. If you’re a fan of tracks like ‘Knights Of Cydonia’ by Muse then this song is exactly what you’re looking for. Continuing the momentum the record has already generated ‘Wake Me Up When It’s Over’ brings back the country esc twang and fuses it with the more rock and roll style you’d expect from Myles Kennedy. Once again, his vocals are the star of the show as he demonstrates his extraordinary vocal range throughout this number.

Unfortunately I wasn’t the biggest fan of ‘Love Rain Down’. I felt that the song lacked the energy that has been present through the record. It’s by no means a bad track, just not what I’m into, so go into this one with an open mind. Luckily for me ‘Tell It Like It Is’ is exactly what I wanted from this record. Myles’ vocals add a whole lot of character to the track and the instrumental behind them compliments his voice in a way that makes the whole track seem larger than life. This is by far my favourite track on the entire record so you’ve got to check it out!

‘Moonshot’ is a slower number that has a larger focus on its more melodic side. It’s one of those songs that fans will get their lighters out and sway them in the air while the band gives it their all. This is a really good song and an absolute joy to listen to. Sadly, I can’t say the same about ‘Wanderlust Begins’. I think the song just came and went without leaving anything in my head. A very unmemorable track from a record full of moments of note.

The penultimate track is the powerful and joyous ‘Sifting Through The Fire’. A cheery instrumental accompanied by Myles dynamic voice gets you all set up for one hell of a final track and I think ‘Worried Mind’ delivers but in an unusual way. It’s a very different type of song. A much more stripped back number that really allows the whole band to show what they are capable of. It’s a very intriguing song musically and I think it’s the perfect way to end such a diverse album.

Myles Kennedy has delivered one hell of a record despite it not being what most fans would expect from the Alter Bridge front man. The album has its lows however the highs really overshadow them to the point of making them obsolete. I cannot recommend this album enough so be sure to check it out as soon as you can!
