Hardcore metallers Capra has made quite the impact on the metal scene with the release of ‘In Transmission’ and I have been lucky enough to catch up with Tyler Harper to discuss the album, potential touring and much more. Check out the interview below and once you’ve done that, why not check out our review of the band’s new album here!
This is TheRockFix.com and I am joined here today with Tyler Harper from Capra! How are you doing?
Tyler: I’m doing great man, Thanks for having me.
You’ve recently released your debut album ‘In Transmission’, how have you found the general reaction to the record?
Tyler: I think the reactions been incredible! The fans seem to be really enjoying the record and it’s great to see just how much some people are digging the music.
Have you been surprised at the reaction the singles garnered before the album dropped?
Tyler: Oh absolutely. I don’t think any of us were expecting them to blow up like they did but it was great to see.
How was it getting the album ready during this whole pandemic situation?
Tyler: We actually had most of the record recorded in late 2019. We had around 8 songs and it was only really when Metal Blade approached us we thought it may be a little too short so we got to work on some more tracks. It was certainly different recording and abiding by the socially distancing measures because we like everyone to be there and be able to put in their two cents.
With these lockdowns seemingly going away as long as everything goes to plan, does the band have any plans of hitting the road?
Tyler: We’ve actually been working on dates recently, We’ve recently booked a local show and we’re hoping to do the west coast at the end of the year. As for outside of the states, I don’t know how much of this I can say but we’ll go with it, We’ve been in talks with a European and Australian promoter. It’s really just nice to be talking about the prospect of live shows again
Are there any songs of the new album that have you excited for debuting live?
Tyler: The three tracks we recorded after the initial album was recorded have never been played before, so I’d have to say them, but if I had to pick one? I’d have to say ‘Mutt’, I really think that’d my favourite track on the whole album. I think it’s clear when you listen to the album that these songs were always intended for live shows.
While you’ve had this prolonged period away from live shows, have you guys started working on anything new?
Tyler: We never stopped. The three tracks we added to the album were originally intended for the next one. I believe we have around 6 to 8 tracks written and a bucket load of riffs to use when we feel we can get them in.
What has it been like working under Metal Blade?
Tyler: It’s been great, really. They have been really good to us and they’ve allowed us to do what we want for the most part musically. There’s always a bit of giving and take but overall they have become like a part of the band and I’ve got nothing but praise for those guys.
It’s awesome to see more bands with female vocalists breaking out into the scene, how’s it been for you personally trying to break the mould?
Tyler: It’s actually been quite simple for us I’d say. There are still people who don’t get it and think it should be a guy but I’m always like “Have you heard bands like Walls of Jericho?” It’s been done before and I think it’s only gonna get more common. Plus, Crow is a badass and she takes any of those sorts of comments well and I think she lays it all out on the record and that’s all the argument she needs.
I found your style to be very unique. What bands inspired your style of play?
Tyler: So, I and Jeremy are the bands hardcore kids. For me, there was a lot of influence from bands like Comeback Kid and especially Every Time I Die. Ben brings in the sort of punk aesthetic and Crow has this really unique Thrash background that just adds so much to what we do. We’ve got a nice variety.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Tyler: Be sure to check out our socials and our Bandcamp, I believe we’re getting the last lot of vinyl in as they all sold out before so be sure to keep an eye out for those.
