Album Review: Born Of Osiris – Angel Or Alien

June 30, 2021 | Reviewed By

It’s no secret that Born Of Osiris release their music like a well-oiled machine which, in favour, results in their fans more often than not being pleased with what the band release, and their upcoming album ‘Angel or Alien’ seems to be headed for more of the same. Single and title track ‘Angel or Alien’ has already amassed over 950,000 streams on Spotify alone and has been met with mostly praise from fans and critics alike. Born Of Osiris are always a polarizing band and I don’t doubt that this album will be any different. Here is my review of their latest album ‘Angel or Alien’.

I have to admit, Born Of Osiris have upped their game on some of the tracks on this record. Opening track ‘Poster Child’ is a memorable anthem-like track that demonstrates the band’s knack for mid-2000 esc prog riffs and emphatic lyricism. Single ‘Angel or Alien’ is the real star of the show. It may be one of the best songs the band has put out in my opinion and it’s no wonder it has done so well since its release. The sci-fi style of the band mixed with a newfound passion fills the song with character and purpose. This track is up there with the likes of ‘Machine’ and ‘Under The Gun’!

Despite its ups, the album is far from perfect. ‘Waves’ comes out early and feels generic and almost manufactured while a span of songs later on the album (‘Crossface, Echobreather and ‘Lost Soul’) just feel very forced and uninspired. The songs are your run of the meal tracks that don’t leave much in the way of memories or enthusiasm. I just couldn’t bring myself to get behind these tracks which is a real shame, to be honest.

The latter part of the record does pick up, however. ‘In For The Kill’ is a beefy track that will have you headbanging for hours on end, while ‘You Are The Narrative’ main selling point is almost djent like guitar squeals and licks. The penultimate track ‘Truth and Denial’ does an excellent job of satisfying listeners with its blend of heaviness and precision, which sets up a grand finale and ‘Shadowmourne’, although quite different from what you’d expect, certainly delivers. A very atmospheric song full of emotion and passion culminates the album in a way I believe most fans would be pleased with.

Overall the album isn’t perfect however its highs stick out a lot more than its lows. Born Of Osiris have managed to create a fairly memorable release here that will fill many fans with joy for the time being and I’m sure these tracks will be taken to the next level when they are eventually allowed to be played in a live setting.
