Powerwolf are quickly becoming one of the biggest names in power metal and for good reason. Their music is constantly evolving and no matter what, you can always guarantee that their songs will make you feel like your embarking on an epic journey. ‘Call Of The Wild’ has already generated an insane amount of hype with the single ‘Beast of Gévaudan’ already getting over 2.6 million streams on Spotify alone. I cannot wait to dive into this release so without any further delay, here is my review of Powerwolf’s ‘Call Of The Wild’.

If you are already a fan of the band then there is plenty of stuff here that will blow you away. Tracks like ‘Faster Tham the Flame’, ‘Alive Or Undead’ and ‘Glaubenskraft’ take heavy influence for the band’s tendency to utilise a more operatic feel with the use of choirs and string sections. These tracks all give off an overwhelming feeling of importance and they will fit in perfectly with what fans have come to expect from the German Power Metallers.

Theirs no hiding the fact that the singles ‘Beast of Gévaudan’ and ‘Dancing With The Dead’ have already worked their way into fans hearts and theirs a good reason for that. Both these tracks tell an exceptional story in the form of a well-composed piece of music. When it comes to technical riffs and melodies, Powerwolf has them in bucketloads. These singles perfectly capture the essence of the album and I don’t think the band could have picked two better tracks to push this album out there.

The entire album is extremely strong and may have some of the bands best work to date on it. My personal highlights of the album are the tracks ‘Sermon Of Swords’ and ‘Reverent Of Rats’. ‘Sermon Of Swords’ opening takes my breath away each and every time I hear it. It instantly reminded me of the sort of feeling you get when the music kicks in after you enter the lair of a boss in a game. It’s a song that I would highly recommend to anyone who has even the slightest interest in power metal. As for ‘Reverent Of Rats’, this song just stuck with me after I listened to it. I found myself constantly singing the song’s title and if a song can be that memorable after such a short time, you’ve done something right.

Overall, I believe this is one of the best releases of the year. Often, power metal can feel oversaturated and generic yet Powerwolf always manages to add a level of excitement and uniqueness that only they seem to be able to deliver. I can only imagine what these songs are going to sound like live and with the band scheduled to play their only UK show in October, you dont have long to wait!
