Album Review: Stone Broken – Revelation

Stone Broken are back with their latest album ‘Revelation’. The album promises to be some of the band’s most “out there” work as they strive to push themselves to the next level. I had to see what all the noise was about so here is my review of the release.

Opening the album is ‘Black Sunrise’, an energetic, anthem-like track that kicks the album off in a powerful way. Grovey riffs dominate the song and give off a nice bouncy feel which will have fans of the music bopping along in no time. The momentum only increases as ‘The Devil You Know’ introduces a much more angst-filled mood. The track has a very in your face attitude with its simple yet impactful beat. The constant bass hits allow the song to feel larger than it actually is which can be hard to pull off nowadays.

Following on from that is ‘Revelation’ which opts for a more electronic esc feel. This change of style works in the band’s favour in my opinion as it adds a bit more depth to their overall sound. They do a great job of blending their heavier style with this more mainstream feel. ‘Make It Out Alive’ slows the pace of the record down as the band drop for a more emotion-driven song. Despite a more sombre overall feel, the song still packs quite a punch.

Up next is ‘Me Without You’ which is probably the most radio rock esc song on the album. An acoustic instrumental matched with delicately sung vocals just screams daytime radio so I wouldn’t be surprised if this song ends up doing fairly well. ‘Without A Reason’ starts to rebuild the energy in the album with a more upbeat approach. Almost a mix of everything that’s come before it, the song utilises both acoustic and electric styles which give off amazing contrast that hooks the listener in for the ride.

‘Over The Line’ misses the mark a little for me, the song feels a little bit too simplistic and it just doesn’t pack the same punch as the rest of the album. On the other hand, ‘Stronger’ delivers a beautifully played song that wouldn’t be out of place at the end of a movie as the hero rides off into the sunset. Following that is the track ‘This Revival’ which signals the beginning of the end and it does a great job of pulling the listener back in for a climactic finale. Its real highlight has to be the natural flow of the music, it’s such a joyous listen that most fans will want to put it straight back on.

The penultimate track ‘So Damn Easy’ gets the party started once more with its upbeat and infectious rhythm. It’s not often I say this about a rock song but this track has so much danceability to it. Whether you headbang or dance like no one’s watching, I guarantee you that this track will have you moving. Finishing off the album is ‘Gimme Some More’ and I think it does a decent job closing out the record. The song definitely feels like a culmination of every style the band have used on this album however the song just comes across as a little too cheesy for my liking

Overall, Stone Broken have done a great job with this release. I have no doubt that fans of the band are going to have no problem deep-diving into each and every track on display here. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea however for the fans of this type of music, you are sure to fall in love with this album.
