I Prevail are back with their fourth studio album titled ‘True Power’ and fans have been very vocal about their excitement for new music from the Detroit rockers. The band have not released a full-length album since their critically acclaimed 2019 release titled ‘TRAUMA’ so it’s nice for fans to know that the wait is finally over. Here are my thoughts on the new album!
Setting the tone for the album is a brief introductory track titled ‘0:00’ that transitions swiftly into ‘There’s Fear In Letting Go’. A familiar-sounding track that captures the sound I Prevail has honed in on throughout their previous three albums. As expected, both vocalists utilize their contracting delivery to create a satisfying sense of duality within the track that is only amplified by a synth-driven instrumental.
Turning up the heavy dial to 11 is ‘Body Bag’. Hard-hitting percussion mixed with chaotic chord progressions and a tonne of angst will send fans into a moshing frenzy once this drops in a live environment. ‘Self-Destruction’ brings a more slow and methodical approach to bringing the heaviness while highlighting a more rap-orientated vocal delivery. Massive Nu-Metal feels are given off this one so if you need a 2022 rap metal fix maybe give this one a spin.
The album takes many twists and turns in its sound. From more old-school sounding tracks such as ‘Bad Things’ and ‘Long Live The King’ to Anthemic entries like ‘Deep End’, the record will take you on a journey through the band’s influences and progression. Some songs on this record sound as if they are heavily influenced by the iconic sound of early Linkin Park era songs and it lends itself well to what I Prevail have made for themselves.
It’s not common anymore for a band to drop an album with 15 tracks on it, however it does not start to stagnate, this record’s diversity keeps the listener hooked and offers some of its best rights at the end. ‘Closure’ is a prime suspect to work its way into the heads and onto the notebooks of emo teens around the world while ‘Visceral’ brings a more breakneck approach just to make sure your neck gets the workout it deserves. Closing out the album is the track ‘Doomed’, A highly emotional track that is sure to hit you deep in your feelings. A mellow number that is primarily played out on keys with heavenly harmonies overlaying the prominent melody.
Album number four from I Prevail hits in a big way. It shows the band have continued to improve their ability and adaptability over the years and culminates in some of their best work to date. Adopting a sound that isn’t exactly killing it right now and making it into their own is always a risk however they have done a phenomenal job at it!
