If you’re a fan of heavy music then you’ve probably heard the name Lorna Shore over the past year or so. After going viral with the release of ‘To The Hellfire…’ the band seemed to shoot themselves into the spotlight of the deathcore scene. Since then, they have released their ‘And I Return To Nothingness’ EP and done as much touring as they possibly could to continue their momentum. ‘Pain Remains’ is the name of the band’s new album and the question is, does it live up to the hype?! Here’s what I thought of it!
Right off the bat, Lorna Shore opens the album with a choir of voices singing over a looming instrumental that helps build the atmosphere and setting. ‘Welcome Back, O Sleeping Dreamer’ doesn’t ease you in at all as it unleashes demonic gutturals and machine guns like Blast beats from the off. Match that with Will’s incredible vocal range and you have yourself a behemoth of a track to open the album! Don’t expect any rest bite from this release. This release, ‘Into The Earth’ continues the brutality and ups the heaviness that little bit more. This track has plenty of moments that will make a deathcore fan screw their face up in disgust (but in a good way).
Building upon what has come before it is ‘Sun//Eater’ opens with a beautiful orchestral passage before diving right back into the chaos that is Lorna Shore. The elegance of the orchestral instrumental contrasting with the brutality of deathcore works in such an incredible way. The two styles are polar opposites yet they complement each other so well. ‘Cursed To Die’ uses melodic work to contrast the harsh nature of Will’s gutturals and it works well. When the song cuts the tempo and needs to get heavy, it does so cleanly and dynamically.
Following that is ‘Soulless Existence’ and jeez, the opening of this one will split a room down the middle in a matter of seconds. The sense of impending doom is generated from this track and this one is just begging to be unleashed upon a live crowd. ‘Apotheosis’ really leans into the orchestral opening but completely obliterates it with an ambush of gutturals and power chords. This changing between rapid delivery to half-time beatdowns, this track will test even the most hardened metal head! Don’t think for a second that you’re going to get a rest though as ‘Wrath’ unleashes an all-out assault of brutal proportions that will embed itself in the mind of the listener for days to come!
Closing out the album are the three parts of ‘Pain Remains’. Part one titled ‘Dancing Like Flames’ utilizes a lot of softer elements than what you may be used to. This isn’t a balls-to-the-walls brutality track as it uses a variety of vocal deliveries to distinguish emotion and meaning to the lyrics. Don’t be fooled, however, it’s still a heavy track full of everything you want from a Lorna Shore Track. Part 2 titled ‘After All I’ve Done, I’ll Disappear’ dials up the heaviness while utilizing the orchestral instrumental once more. The progression from part 1 to 2 is seamless and you probably won’t even realize the song has technically changed. Part 3 titled ‘In A Sea Of Fire’ is the last horror of the album. Opening with an atmospheric instrumental before unleashing one final assault on the listener, this song incorporates a bit of everything from the album. A perfect way to close out the album!
Lorna Shore has not only managed to release an album that lives up to the hype, but they may also have released their best album to date! This record showcases the band’s progression and newfound direction since Will Ramos joined the band and I can only see this album helping their momentum continue in a forwards direction.
