Album Review: Avatar – Dance Devil Dance

I think it’s safe to say Avatar has been on an upwards trajectory for a while now, so with their new album ‘Dance Devil Dance’ on the horizon the band has a tonne of attention on them. Sometimes having the eyes of the scene on you can cause bands to crumble under the pressure, so has Avatar managed to break the mould and continue their conquest? Let’s find out!

The title track ‘Dance Devil Dance’ opens up proceedings in a heavy way! Giving off the ‘Hail The Apocalypse’ era vibe, this track may be the perfect way to kick off this album. A familiar sound blended with a new sinister aesthetic allows the lister to realize what they are in for right from the off. ‘Chimp Mosh Pit’ unsurprisingly is one for all you pit fiends out there. A dominant percussion track matched with chugging riffs and a little bit of flair, this song isn’t for the faint of heart that’s for sure.

Following that is ‘Valley Of Disease’ which grabs the dial and cranks it all the way up to 11! An extremely heavy track that should come with a whiplash warning. Brutal vocals accompanied by a brutal backing track help to give off a really evil feel to the Avatar sound. You’d think with a title like ‘On The Beach’ this track would give you a bit of a rest, however, it’s quite the opposite. A methodically heavy track that chops and changes between making you want to windmill and wanting to open up the dance floor to have a little boogie, this song captures both Avatar’s heaviness and whimsical aesthetic.

‘Do You Feel In Control’ comes out swinging with a bunch of Chaotic energy? This song quite clearly proves you are not in control and that you are now part of Avatar’s wild circus! Just to throw a spanner in the works, ‘Gotta Wanna Riot’ may be one of the funkiest tracks Avatar has ever released and it is so bloody good! I couldn’t contain myself from dancing like nobody was watching when I first heard this and I seriously hope this one gets some love on their live shows! It’s not an Avatar album without a more vocally driven track and this album has it in the form of ‘The Dirt I’m Buried In’. It isn’t quite a Bloody Angel however it has a really catchy bassline to it and the chorus has massive potential to echo around concert halls all over the world!

Up next is ‘Clouds Dipped in Chrome’ which once again brings out a heavier edge to the records, while ‘Hazmat Suit’ almost definitely is designed to have festival crowds running in circles while roaring like an army’s battalion.

‘Train’ once again opts for a more unorthodox sound. Almost feeling a little bluesy at times, this track once again proves that Avatar is more than capable of incorporating different genres into their twisted blend of death metal. Closing out the album is ‘Violence No matter What’ and it is a rare occurrence that Avatar enlists the help of a feature, however Lzzy Hale’s vocals are almost the key to the success of this one. The song feels deeply layered and every time I listened to it, I found something else that blew me away! What a way to close out an album!

Avatar just doesn’t seem to miss and this album is no exception. They continue to improve upon their now-distinguished sound as well as incorporate new elements into their chaotic world. If you haven’t heard of Avatar before or you’re their biggest fan, this album is sure to impress you.
