Hello, I’m Fraser Kerr, and I’m joined here with Charlie and Otto from Crashface. How are you guys?
Charlie: Yeah. Positive man.
Yeah. You, you opened up the NEU stage today. How was that?
Otto: Yeah, the NEU stage was really cool. Um, playing at 10:30 in the morning was, uh… a very odd experience. Like we played a show less than 12 hours before, so starting our set and just seeing people running through the gates to come to us was really cool.
Charlie: It’s just a good time being at Trees cuz we’re such a big fan, so being able to open it up for one day, it’s a dream.
Otto: Yeah. Proper honor.
So have you been to Trees yourselves as fans then?
Otto: Yeah, we all came here in 2016, 2017 – Just as punters, and then I worked press, Charlie worked the bar for 2018, 2019.
Charlie: Yeah. We’ve been all over the gaff here. We just love it, man.
Otto: Know it like the back of our hands.
Charlie: It’s so chill.
So you’ve been supporting a lot of people recently with your new single ‘Bleach Blood’, how was the recording process for that song?
Otto: Um, same as any of the other ones, really. We kind of get together, we just work on track on my laptop and that’s it. Charlie comes to me with a riff and we like it. We mess around with some pedals. We’re just like, oh my God, there’s a drop seven harmony layer thing that we can do. And then suddenly it was like we’re ripping off beartooth… but we made it our own, I think.
Charlie: It’s all super organic because it… again, it’s all done in Otto’s bedroom. So we track everything there. We do all the vocals there. So it’s super comfortable. We just get to sit there for days on end and just hone over certain things, and if we like it enough, then you know, you get a song.
So what’s the driving force behind your music?
Otto: Uh, proving people wrong, I think. I don’t know. It’s all a massive catharsis. The whole writing process allows you to get out a lot of emotion in it. Also people saying you can’t get on Radio One from your bedroom.
Charlie: I just love writing music, you know? I love like creating drama through audio, like the best songs ever, and songs that I love the most, and I’m sure the songs that everyone else loves the most are the ones that really invoke certain feelings, like extreme feelings, you know? You get to a certain section, and you’re like “oh shit”. And you feel some sort of chemical man. So yeah anything where I can make someone feel like they’re about to, you know, get in the shit. It’s amazing. Yeah, I love it.
So what are your inspirations?
Otto: At the minute – and sort of growing up – I was a massive Nine Inch Nails fan, Placebo, uh… and then best band in the world…
Charlie: Yeah, My Chemical Romance
Otto: Yeah. Best band in the world.
Obviously
Charlie: That’s especially my go-to. It’s been my ride or die since I was like eight years old. When I talk about drama and theatrics, I mean that’s where it all comes from, man. Um… but as well as like old school punk stuff, we’re very much rooted in that. Like Misfits, Black Flag, Minor Threat, you know? Circle Jerks, all that sort of stuff, like massively into that as well… So chaos and theatrics.
Otto: And the first time I heard the Beatles, I cried.
You were recently were invited to Berlin by Marshall Records. How was that?
Otto: So we spent 23 hours in Berlin. We… short story… we met two club owners, and 7:00 AM airport Guinness’s, Negroni’s on the plane because you know… that was a great idea, and it was… It was chaos. Great fun. The venue was incredible. Free bar. Amazing.
Charlie: It was our first international venture as a band and I was very happy with it, although it was way too short. Marshall put on one hell of a gig for us. It was amazing. The speakers they are doing there are amazing – Check ’em out. But yeah, we just can’t wait to get back out there. Like we love Germany.
So are you looking to go international more?
Charlie and Otto: Oh, as soon as, as soon as. As soon as possible.
Um, that’s all I’ve got for you. Thank you very much.
Charlie: Thank you man!
