NOAHFINNCE: “I Am Very Excited For It. I’m Also Very Terrified”

| Interviewed By

NOAHFINNCE has had one hell of a year already! From touring with Slam Dunk headliners Enter Shikari, to his single ‘Life’s A Bit’ breaking the 10 million total streams’ barrier on Spotify, it’s safe to say the up-and-coming artist has a tonne of eyes on him! We sat down with him backstage at Slam Dunk Festival to talk about new music, touring, and more.

Hello I’m Fraser Kerr, and you join me backstage here with NOAHFINNCE! How you doing?

Noah: I’m all right. Yeah.

Um, so let’s just get right into it with the big thing, the new single!

Noah: Yeah.

‘I know better’. How has the reaction been to that?

AD

Noah: Great. Yeah, I was really happy from it, honestly. I do this thing, like, with my fans. We’ll stay up until midnight. Listen to the song together. It’s always really nice, but everyone’s been really cool about it.

Yeah, I mean, it must be really nice to have that, like, community already pre-built from your YouTube?

Noah: Oh… Absolutely. Yeah.

How was it moving from doing covers and stuff on-on YouTube to actually being into music?

Noah: Yeah, it was. I mean, I feel like it went pretty smoothly. I feel like I’m very lucky. I’m very glad that I started off doing covers when I first did YouTube because otherwise maybe it would have been a bit of a shock. But I mean, everybody’s been really pumped about it. I’ve not had any negative reactions from my audience. Yeah, I guess I’m just very lucky.

And what’s the creative process like when you’re recording a song?

Noah: Yeah, so it kind of depends… like… kind of depends. A lot of the time, I’ll like demo at home and it’ll start off with like… I usually start off with a rhythm rather than melody, but I’ll go like, rhythm and then I’ll find a melody to that and then it’ll build from that for lyrics. But then sometimes I’ll just go to the studio, usually with people that I’ve written with before, and I like I trust that we’ll make something good. But if I’m not demoing at home and then bringing it into the studio. We’ll just start from scratch in the studio. Usually writing with my friend Stef, he has this really weird guitar tone that for some reason is just really easy to write too. So that’s usually how it goes.

So the new single got a bit more of a darker sound too.

Noah: Yeah.

Can fans expect more of that to come?

Noah: Yes. Yes, absolutely. I’m like demoing a bunch of stuff now and I feel like a lot of them are both darker and poppier, but also heavier at the same time, which doesn’t really make sense now that I’m saying it, but I think it will when people hear it.

And can fans expect more music soon?

Noah: Yes, definitely.

An album?

Noah: An album, Well, that’s what… that’s what we’re headed towards. I’ve had two EP’s. What we’re doing right now is just demoing a bunch and then trying to pick from the demos. But I’ve never written an album before, so I didn’t realise how difficult it was picking them.

I mean, I’m sure it will be great once it’s all done.

Noah: I hope so!

So you started your year in a really big way this year.

Noah: Yeah.

Touring with Enter Shikari on the first of their residency tours.

Noah: Yeah.

How the fuck was that?

Noah: It was. It was so nice. And like, it’s a first support tour I’ve ever done. Like, I’ve only ever done my own tours, and I kind of went into it being like, Alright, I’ll stay out of the way. Like, don’t want to bother them. They’re doing their thing. I really respect that. But like, they were so welcoming and so nice, like genuinely just like the nicest people ever. And getting to see that show live every night was insane. Like I’d play my set and chill out a bit, go into the pit, crowd surf a little bit. And it was just it was as a load of fun.

It’s always great to hear when bands are just really nice people as well as great musicians.

Noah: Yeah.

And you’re not stopping there because you’re joining them again at a start of next year.

Noah: Yeah.

On their arena tour…

Noah: Yeah.

Got to be excited for that?

Noah: I am very excited for it. I’m also very terrified. Um, like the biggest show I’ve played was the London one with Shikari this year, and that was like 1900. And then going from that to Wembley is going to be like a BIG, BIG step up. But I am really excited. It’s going to be a lot, though.

I’m sure it’ll be great. So how is it to be back at Slam Dunk? because last time you played, I think it was like your third show or something.

Noah: It was. It was my third ever show.

Yeah, ever.

Noah: Yeah, it was. I feel a lot more confident now going into this one because I’ve done like since then I’ve done like two U.S. Tours, two UK tours, I feel well… well… more adjusted to this kind of thing, but it’s really nice to be back. It’s always a fun time. I mean, like everybody here’s really nice walking around and seeing bands that I grew up listening to, also really cool, so I’m excited.

Yeah, I feel like Slam Dunk got a really good mix of like newer up and coming artist and also the old school artists.

Noah: Yes, I agree

Um… so your set’s coming up later,

Noah: Yeah,

Excited for it?

Noah: Yeah, yeah, yeah. No I am.

Have you got anything special planned?

Noah: No, no. Not specifically.

No. Just playing the songs?

Noah: Yeah. Well, I guess maybe special. There’s maybe a song that people wouldn’t expect us to play.

Interesting. Interesting.

Noah: Try and make it sound special.

Thank you for coming to speak to me.

Noah: That’s alright

Thank you for joining me.

Noah: Thanks for having me.

Enjoy the rest of your day.

Noah: Cheers, you too! Sick!
