Hi, I’m Nick from The Rock Fix and I’m here with Gen And The Degenerates, How are you guys doing?
Gen: Hello. We’re good.
Jay: Very good. Very warm. It’s very warm, but not complaining too much.
Evan: Yeah, I’ve gone from Fur Coat to no top, so it’s pretty hot.
It’s quite extreme change, isn’t it? How have you found it being at a festival so far?
Gen: Oh, we’ve loved it. I’ve been here since Wednesday. These guys have come last night. But yeah it’s been amazing. The lineup’s been fantastic. Had so much fun. I do have really big blisters on my feet, but other than that, vibing.
Jay: That festival life. That’s how it goes sometimes.
Brilliant, so obviously you’re here, as you say enjoying yourselves, Do you ever find it difficult to separate being a band here and also just trying to have a good time?
Gen: I think maybe at first we did.
Jay: Yeah. There was maybe a time when we were still sort of getting used to playing these sorts of things. Nowadays it feels just natural. It feels just like we can, because I’ve been coming to festivals for years and to now sort of get to be on the other side of that a little bit, and I can still enjoy that festival experience, but also I get to pick up my bass at some point and make some noise, you know. It’s just soaking it all in really. It’s just enjoying every second of it.
All right, awesome. You recently toured with Skunk Anansie, How was that for you guys?
Gen: It was brilliant. We loved learning from them. They’re really fantastic musicians, and just fantastic people. They really set an example of the standard that we should be working at – but in a fun way – Like we also had a great time with them. Having little post show drinks occasionally. It was like a really good balance.
All right. Have you found that you’ve got any fans coming back out from the support shows?
Gen: Oh yeah, definitely.
Evan: Yeah. I mean, we are doing our headlines all later this year and just online, the amount of people that have said “can’t wait to come and see you again”, like that’s such a nice feeling to know that we connected with people that were there to see the headliner, see Skunk Anansie. It is nice to know that they’ve connected with our music as well while we were there. So it’s good.
Okay. Yeah, that’s cool. So you mentioned your headline tour coming up. How do you prepare differently from say a festival performance to the headline tour?
Jay: So for like the set we’re playing today, it’s very much we’ve got half an hour, we’re gonna just absolutely try and blast everyone’s faces. You know what I mean? And just make it a real chaotic party. But with a headline tour, we’ve got a longer set. Wanting to have a bit more sort of ebb and flow. Do you know what I mean? I think that’s the thing. You want it to be more of a – without meaning to sound like a pretentious wanker – like a journey. It should have some slow moments and it should pick up again. We’re looking forward to actually being able to sort of do that and not just have half an hour to play with and have a full sort of amount of time to run with.
Gen: Absolutely. For sure.
Obviously, recently we had the pandemic, all live music kind of stopped, How important was it for you guys when live music came back?
Evan: I mean that’s our live blood, like we love being in the studio and doing stuff and being creative, but being out on the road, playing shows. We’re live bands. We like going to shows, we like being at shows, we like playing shows. So when it came back it was just like “Right. Yes. We can crack on now”. Cause obviously we signed to Marshall during the pandemic, and then we came back just like fucking 200% ready to go, playing big shows, playing festivals, new EP out, like we just came back ready to fucking go all guns blazing. We came back to such a good reception as well. We’ve played so many shows since, everything opened back up and it’s just, everything’s going up for us. So we’re well happy to be back.
Awesome. Well that’s all I’ve got for you guys today. Do you guys wanna add anything yourselves?
Jay: Buy tickets, come down to a show, come down to our headline tour. Uh, enjoy the music, be chaotic and have fun.
Awesome. Thank you very much guys.
