One of the most unique bands coming out of 2023 has to be the higly energetic outfit known as Samurai Pizza Cats! with their debut album You’re Hellcome set to release very soon, We got in touch with Daniel Haniß (AKA Danskimo) to discuss the new record, upcoming tours and so much more!
Hey Dan, thanks for taking the time to take this interview. How are you doing?
Very good! I am currently on Tour in the USA with Electric Callboy and we’re having a really great time.
This has been quite the summer for alternative music, Samurai Pizza Cats got the chance to play Full Force festival back in June, how was that show for you guys?
Full Force was the first major Festival for us. It was an amazing opportunity to open a festival that size. For me personally it was especially interesting to play as the opener with Samurai Pizza Cats and also Headline the same day with Electric Callboy. It was amazing.
When it comes to all of the singles that have already been released, there seems to be a very unique yet satisfying mix of gritty aggression and some more comical themes too. Does this style allow more creative freedom within the band’s writing?
Not necessarily because of the mix of themes and rather because I work with totally different people when it comes to songwriting with Samurai Pizza Cats. I feel creatively fulfilled to have such a variety of cool people to work with overall.
The upcoming album has a plethora of guest features, how has the process been of incorporating even more musical minds into your unique sound?
Through Electric Callboy I have been very fortunate to be very well connected with so many musicians and other people. That served as a great kick off for Samurai Pizza Cats because I was able to reach out to those artists really easily. Some of them were my friends beforehand.
Obviously we know how much you guys hate the idea of pineapple on pizza, but what is
the go-to pizza order for the Samurai Pizza Cats camp?
That’s a lie! Pineapple on pizza is like Nutella with butter.
What are some of the challenges for yourself which come with trying to balance more than one band at a time?
Electric Callboy will always be the No 1 priority for me. But the more Samurai Pizza Cats are growing there will be more and more conflicts especially regarding the tour schedules, but for now im able to handle it quite well!
You’re heading out on tour with Annisokay this September, what can new and existing fans alike expect from you guys when you hit the stage?
Our new record “You’re Hellcome“ will just be released before the tour. We will play all songs from that record! Also this is our first tour so it’s as exciting for us.
For us over here in the UK, is there any news you can share with us about when SPC will be touring here?
Not yet! But we’re hoping to be able to tour the UK in the near future!
I’ll end with a bit more of a hypothetical question: Are there any current artists who are not in the rock/metal music scene but you guys would love to collaborate with?
We actually love to tour with a Japanese band even in Japan! That would be amazing.
Thanks so much for your time once again! I cannot wait for the new album to drop.
