With the release of their sophomore album in the summer of last year, Nova Twins have been on an unstoppable upwards trajectory – even getting shortlisted for a 2022’s Mercury Prize. With the band set to give the album a spin on tour this month, alongside strong support from Uninvited and Witch Fever, we just had to head down to Brighton’s Chalk and check out the noise, here’s what went down.

Glasgow formed four piece Uninvited were first to grace the stage. The band got the early attendance moving with their more pop-rock stylings. While the band had a slightly timid stage presence compared to the other bands that shared the stage with them – something that will undoubtedly change as they get some more shows under their belts – they performed their set excellently. This band will undoubtedly grow a solid fan base in no time.

Witch Fever

Witch Fever seemed to have as much anticipation from the crowd for their set as Nova Twins would have. This band has been making waves across the heavy music industry with the release of their debut album ‘Congregation’ – which got a good outing during their performance. Right from the dirty dark rhythms of ‘I Saw You Dancing’ all the way to Witch Fever staple ‘Blessed Be Thy’, a ritual-like feeling could be felt as everyone’s eyes were locked onto the band. Amy Walpole even showed her no-fucks attitude as she waded through the crowd towards the bar to use it as a second stage.

The excitement in the room could be felt as the house lights dimmed and the stage lights blasted the crowd. The strong bassline of ‘Fire & Ice’ would be the first to grace the ears of those in attendance and would set the tone for the electrifying performance – that would keep the crowd on their toes throughout the night. Keeping the energy high, ‘Cleopatra’ and ‘Toolbox’ followed, with pits opening up in the tightly packed crowd throughout. This was the start of the ‘Supernova’ based setlist, which saw a good mix of both the new album and fan favorites.

‘Taxi’ and ‘Bullet’ made for two mesmerizing moments mid set. Despite only being a duo, Nova Twins’ powerful lyricism, musical prowess, and huge commanding stage presence helped them fill the room with potent intoxicating energy throughout their set.

Unfortunately the band had to take a break before they started playing their final song due to a medical incident within the crowd. Thankfully both Amy and Georgia noticed very quickly rushing over to the barriers and helping security get the crowd to make some room. Obviously flustered by the event, once the band returned to the stage, they asked the crowd if they were happy to continue with the final song. The crowd cheered, and the band dedicated final song ‘Choose Your Fighter’ to the member of the audience who was taken out to be checked over medically. Despite a slight ‘on edge’ energy in the room, the powerful duo helped leave the crowd on a high point.

There was a strong feeling of inclusiveness across the night, it didn’t matter who you were, you were invited to let loose and not let anyone tell you how to move your body. This message was felt right from the start – with both supports – till the very last note from the Nova Twins. I would highly recommend heading down to catch Nova Twins next time they tour.
