Album Review: Abyssus – Death Revival

Death Metal is one of those genres that has taken many forms since its inception, however Abyssus plans on bringing back the old school death metal feel with their new album ‘Death Revival’. Here are my thoughts on their new record!

Opening track ‘Metal Of Death’ kicks things off at breakneck speed. Rapid riffs blend well behind Konstantinos Analytis’ ungodly screams. The song doesn’t take a moment to rest and it makes for some great old school death metal. A refreshing change from modern death metal! Continuing down the album and ‘The Ten Commandments’ continues the assault. Headbang inducing drumming holds the song together while chaotic yet precise Guitar solos add a much-needed twist to the heavy track. It’s clear that Abyssus only go full speed ahead right from the off.

As you’d expect, the album doesn’t let up and ‘Uncertain Future’ really comes across as a pretty standard death metal track. The song lacks any real innovation and at times you’d forget your listening to Abyssus and end up checking who it is you’re listening to while ‘The Beast Withing is the polar opposite. This song has so much character and really grabs your attention. The chugging riffs matched with well-placed drumming patterns gives this song its own spotlight and leaves the rest of the album in its shadow. By far the best song on the record.

Following that is ‘Genocide’ and once again, the song, unfortunately, doesn’t quite do it for me, It’s woodwind intro feels completely out of place and the song itself just reeks of stereotypical death metal riffs and drumming. I know this is a genre that prides itself on being raw however I just find this song extremely bland. As for ‘The Witch’, this song feels a bit better and actually feels like it belongs with the rest of the record. Nothing out of the ordinary really transpires throughout this track however it gets what it needs to do done to a high standard. Finishing the album is ‘When Wolves Are Out To Hunt’ and once again, the intro of chiming village bells just doesn’t fit. I see what they were trying to do however, there is a good reason as to why most death metal bands just stick to their heavy nature. Regardless of the intro, the track is solid. A much more methodical song that will have fans headbanging along to its sinister groove. An okay ending to an okay record.

As a whole, I think there’s a lot to be desired from this new release. Abyssus are still fairly new faces in the death metal scene so I think that they will continue to improve however I think this album is quite weak compared to their competition. Luckily there are signs of greatness scattered throughout the entire release so I think the band are still full of potential.
