Angelus Apatrida are back with their highly anticipated self-titled album! Following on from the bands 2018 release ‘Cabaret De La Guillotine’ the Spanish thrashers return with a fast-paced, battle-hardened album for the fans’ listening pleasure. Here’s what I thought of the band’s latest album.
Up first is ‘Indoctrinate’. A pure thrash anthem that kicks the album off in chaotic nature. The heavy riffs and bullet-like bass drums would have any crowd moshing in a heartbeat. Guillermo’s vocals sound harsh and full of power. A blistering start to the album that will have any thrash metal fan begging for more. Following that the hard-hitting ‘Bleed The Crown’ arrives to overthrow your mind. An assault of killer riffs and blast beats will have you snapping your neck to the beat!
‘The Age Of Disinformation’ continues the breakneck speed of the record thus far. VÃctor puts in a remarkable performance on the drums for this song. Thrashy yet precise patterns fill this song and drives it into your head. The harmonies created by both Guillermo and David accompany the heavy drumming beautifully. Up next is ‘Rise Or Fall’. A brawler’s dream turned into a song. A mix of the intense thrash riffs and hardcore like percussion makes you want to break stuff. The song reminds me of a Hatebreed style song with ludicrous solos added to show off.
Continuing the assault, ‘Childhood’s End’ doesn’t plan on slowing the momentum at all. The song sounds like a Blackened Thrash metal song which is something I never knew I needed until now. The lingering riffs create a sense of doom and dread and lends itself to the band’s sound perfectly. ‘Disposable Liberty’ returns to a more traditional thrash sound. A slower yet just as heavy song to give your neck a rest is just what the album needed. An impressive song musically shows just how good these guys are. This song is a must-listen!
Picking up the tempo once again ‘We Stand Alone’ is a Mother’s dream. The ferocious riffs and blistering drumming demands circle pits and chaos. The breakdown is brutal as hell, forged in the depths of hell itself. The standout song from the album by a long shot in my opinion! ‘Through The Glass’ unfortunately feels slightly out of place on the record. A more steady song with little to shout about makes the tune feel like album filler. A disappointing blip in what has been an incredible album up until now.
Thankfully, ‘Empire Of Shame’ puts the album back on track. Thrash and melodies have never sounded better! A great example that Thrash metal doesn’t have to be all about aggression. An impressive demonstration of Guillermo’s ability to change up vocal styles helps this song to stand out! A great way to line up the final song. ‘Into The Well’ is the icing on the cake of thrash. Slower riffs and blistering drumming catapult this song into the sunset. It’s clear that Angelus Apatrida doesn’t need to slow down at all.
Overall, the album is a Thrash fan’s best friend. It has high intensity throughout the entire album and each song can hold its own for the most part. The Spanish Thrash metallers are still going strong after 20 years and it seems as though the best may be yet to come!
