Album Review: As Everything Unfolds – Ultraviolet

April 20, 2023 | Reviewed By

After quite the meteoric rise from the success of their debut album ‘Within Each Lies The Other’, As Everything Unfolds is back with their sophomore album titled ‘Ultraviolet’. The band have seen a tonne of attention come their way off the back of tours with Enter Shikari and being featured across Europe with Impericon Festival, so the new album could not come at a more opportune time. Here are my thoughts on the record!

From the very first flam hit, The album brings a powerful blend of rock and synth. The title track ‘Ultraviolet’ delivers a mix of both the band’s heavier tendencies and their ability to deliver a groovy yet compelling melodically driven verse. ‘Felt Like Home’ was the first glimpse into the new era of the band and ever since it was dropped as a single back in October, fans have made it one of their anthems and for good reason. This song’s chorus is just begging for a live crowd to echo its words back to the band and its infectious beat will leave you coming black for more!

If you were lucky enough to be at their ‘Within Each Lies The Other’ show in Camden last year then ‘Slow Down’ may sound familiar to you! A punchy and aggressive track that opts for a more in-your-face attitude that creates a wonderful listening experience. Something about ‘Saint Or Rogue’ feels different. Maybe it’s its quirky guitar work or maybe it’s the more upbeat nature of the instrumental however it is a welcome change. This song feels joyous and exciting which is something this scene seems to shy away from quite a bit.

Up next is the track ‘Blossom’ and I feel the highlights of this track come in the form of Charlie’s soft vocals during its verses. The delicate nature of her voice is complimented beautifully by the tame yet effective synth which builds to a climatic delivery of the track’s chorus. ‘Infrared’ serves as a transitional track that builds nicely into the more chaotic-natured ‘Flip Side’ If you were wondering where the track for the Moshers was, here it is! A beefy behemoth of a track that pulls no punches, if you want to let loose a little, get this track on repeat and headbang till your heart is content!

Keeping the pace high is ‘Twilight’ and unlike the film saga by the same name, this track stays consistent throughout! A surprisingly danceable song that will have the pits of the world dancing like they are a teenager alone in their bedroom once again. That is until you get to the track’s breakdown which is destined to cause pure chaos around the world! I don’t often like to pick favourites however ‘Rose Bouquets’ may just be my favourite song As Everything Unfolds has released to date. Everything from the song’s delicate following nature to the way the chorus just itches the brain perfectly makes this song such an enjoyable listens. This is truly a remarkable track that deserves all the love it receives.

As the album draws closer to its conclusion, ‘Daylight’ dials the heaviness back a little and opts for a more vocal-driven song. The use of piano keys to compliment the vocal melody is a very welcome addition and when the song builds to its chorus, the song shines extremely bright. Closing out the album is ‘All I’ve Ever Known’ and I wouldn’t be surprised if this track ends up becoming a staple in the band’s live set. Its extremely energetic instrumental will have you bouncing in a matter of seconds and the overall vibe of the song is extremely positive.
If As Everything Unfolds are at the forefront of the new wave of alternative music then the UK’s offering is in safe hands! This album is clearly not a carbon copy of their previous and it shows a huge amount of growth and development. The band do not seem afraid to change its sound to cater to a larger audience and they appear to be improving with each and every release. The future is looking extremely bright for As Everything Unfolds!
