EP Review: Baby Strange – Land Of Nothing

Glasgow trio Baby Strange recently released their new EP ‘Land of Nothing’. The excitement around the EP has been building, with it’s single ‘More! More! More!’ receiving nearly 500,000 streams. So I thought I would take a look at the release and share my thoughts.

We start off with the aforementioned single ‘More! More! More!’ which is full of energy right off the bat. It bounces along with a nice strong bassline, and some rich guitar tones. Johnny Madden’s voice sits atop the melody perfectly, leading to a really catchy hook in the chorus. As the song progresses it keeps it fresh, changing up it’s beat throughout. I highly recommend checking this track out.

We then get ‘I Want To Believe’ which has grungy undertones, which is fronted by this thumping bassline from Aidan McCann that keeps the song pushing forward. I really like the chorus, which is fronted by a really memorable hook. If the exploding energy in this track translates well to the band’s live show, this one will be one to look out for when they’re in town.

Changing the pace of the album we get ‘There’s Something There’ which starts with the really indulgent twangy guitars, before being joined by a simple drum beat. Despite Johny Madden’s strong energy, the track unfortunately comes across as a bit boring in comparison to first tracks. I wouldn’t turn it off if it came on the radio, but there’s not much that’s exciting to me which makes me doubtful about returning to it.

Thankfully the EP picks up with the electric ‘Club Sabbath’, the great drumming from Connaire McCann keeps this track marching forward. While it’s not as energetic as ‘I Want To Believe’, it still has an exciting quality to it on each listen. Finally the EP gives us ‘Over n Over’ which is backed by a pulsating bassline. This track gives me strong vibes of the likes of IDLEs. This is another track I imagine will be killer live.

Brimming with punky energy, Baby Strange’s new EP is well worth checking out. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on the band to see what they do next.
