EP Review: BEX – SCUM

Punk music has become a bit samey as of late however, Nu-Punk trailblazer BEX is planning on throwing a spanner in the world of the machine with her new EP Scum. From hand-making her clothing (This includes her merch) to attracting massive crowds at festivals such as 2000Trees and Y Not?, BEX is hoping her new EP can continue the momentum she’s gained. Here’s my thoughts on the new release!

Kickstarting the EP is the powerful and attitude-filled track ‘Chained Into My Brain’. A beefy bassline compliments the chaotic progression of the track especially during the song’s chorus. Reverb and heavy-hitting notes capture BEX’s style beautifully and give the listener the right impression of what kind of journey they are in for. Trancy in nature yet straight to the point, ‘Don’t Date The Devil’ offers a catchy anthem-like experience. Following a fairly simple, verse chorus layout, BEX’s sudden changes from soft vocals to a more anger-filled shout give the song a tonne of character that sticks with the listener for a while after listening.

Boasting one of the most memorable choruses on the record, ‘Filfy’ is a joy from start to finish. The song is emotionally charged and will have most of you headbanging along to its in-your-face beat while echoing the words back to yourself. Being as blunt as you’d expect, ‘Misogynistic D—s’ is an empowering track that encourages you to take all the hurt and anger misogynists may have caused you and channel that energy to better yourself and prove to them they don’t mean anything! They aren’t worth your time so why not help prepare their crucifix?

If there is one song on this record that I think will result in a chaotic pit at a live show, that song is certainly ‘SPYD4 K1NG’. Heavy in nature, this song channels a tonne of emotion to create an explosion of ruthless punk rock that doesn’t plan on taking any prisoners. To close out the EP is the aptly titled ‘Trust No One’. Exploring themes of betrayal, and the constant backstabbing culture we seem to just have excepted now. An extremely groovy track that will quite literally have you dancing the hate away, a very fitting way to finish off an EP full of meaning and passion.

BEX has done an exceptional job of finding her sound and using it to create music that packs a punch while spreading very important messages. In a market that seems to becoming very relaxed and almost “safe”, BEX offers a much more raw style and isn’t afraid of annoying people with what she has to say. If this is what we can expect from the UK Punk scene in the future, I’m all here for it!
