Billy Talent is one of the biggest punk bands to come out of Canada so you can always expect a decent level of hype around a new release. ‘Crisis Of Faith’ may however be one of their most anticipated albums as it marks their first studio album release since 2016’s ‘Afraid Of Heights’ so it’s safe to say that fans have been waiting patiently for some new music. I’d have been stupid not to see what the band had in store for its fans so here is my review of Billy Talents ‘Crisis Of Faith’.
Starting off with a groovy track titled ‘Forgiveness I+II’, the album takes little time to really get going. Everything from its memorable riffs to its compelling flow allows the song to take form and instantly engage the listener which is essential for longer tracks like this. Keeping the tempo up is ‘Reckless Paradise’. This old school rock track could quickly become a fan favourite in my opinion. It has some amazing guitar work that does a great job of complementing the vocal delivery on display throughout this track.
‘I Beg To Differ (This Will Get Better)’ is up next and I think it’s a decent entry. The parts where the vocals are almost isolated apart from a subtle melody being played on the guitar really stood out for me. It was a great way to balance the song with the use of contrasting styles. Following that is ‘The Wolf’, a more sombre entry to the album that slows the pace of the record in quite a satisfying way. Intricate drumming patterns are littered throughout this track to really give it some more oomph.
Continuing down the album and ‘Reactor’ is ok. There are certainly better tracks on this record that I’d recommend over this one however that’s not to say this song doesn’t have its charm. Its chorus is quite catchy and I can see this working its way into many rock fans heads in the near future. ‘Judged’ really picks up the pace with its empowering message. Something about a protest song being paired with a more punk rock esthetic will never get boring. I think this may be one of my favourite songs on the entire album.
Following on from that is the more bouncy track titled ‘Hanging Out With The Wrong People’. If there’s ever a track that will have people bopping along to it, it’s this one. A groove-filled bassline allows this track to stand out from the pack while the catchy Hi-Hat work throughout the verses had me hooked. Slowing down a little now and ‘End Of Me’ is a great simplistic track that as such makes for an easy listening experience. The melodies are quite enchanting and the feature from River Cuomo of Weezer adds a whole nother layer to this already jam-packed track.
As the album draws to a close, ‘One Less Problem’ keeps the party alive with its no-nonsense style. The harmonies created as backing vocals are a nice little addition that adds a bit of uniqueness to this track. This song really just screams Billy Talent so I think fans will adore this one. Finishing off the album is ‘For You’ and I don’t think it could be a modern-day punk album without finishing with a love song so they have nailed it here.
I have to say, Billy Talent has released one hell of an album here. The Canadian band have really kept the bar high and I do not doubt that fans will eat this album up. It can be hard to live up to expectations after such a long wait however I think this should do the trick for the ever patience fans of the band.
