Blackpool’s own Boston Manor is back with their first of a two-part album series. ‘Datura’ is the name of the first part and has already created quite the storm ahead of its release. Fans of the band have been extremely vocal about their love for the singles that have been unveiled already so It would be wrong of me to not check out what all the fuss is about. Here are my thoughts on the new album!Â
Opening the record is ‘Datura (Dusk)’. A subtle in-nature track that builds tension by progressively adding elements into the instrumental before becoming more erratic nearer the song’s conclusions. The song transitions effortlessly into ‘Floodlights On The Square’ and introduces a much more hard-hitting feel to the album. Boasting an infectious beat that will leave you with no choice but to move in time with the music, the song really gets the fire started.Â
Picking off where the previous track left off, ‘Foxglove’ turns up the groove and brings the party to you. By far the most danceable track on the record, the song contains a tonne of character that allows the music to flow seamlessly into the mind of the listener. Top that off with a catchy chorus and you are on to a winning recipe! The album only gains more momentum from here with the anthemic esc track ‘Passenger’ cruising in next. This is one of those songs that is just begging for a crowd to bellow the track’s chorus at the top of their lungs during a live set and I think fans will happily abide by that. A bouncy instrumental and a subtle synth beat seem like a match made in heaven in this instant.Â
‘Crocus’ dials the power back a little and instead favors for a more lyrically driven song. A simple yet effective instrumental compliments Henry Cox’s impassioned vocal performance making for a memorable first-time listen. The penultimate track ‘Shelter From The Rain’ does a great job of painting a mental image in your mind during its intro and proceeds to set the mood ahead of the final track of the album. This atmospheric instrumental fits the flow of the record nicely and builds just the right amount of suspense for the final track ‘Inertia’. Emotions and passion are what this track is full to the brim with. Coming in at just over 6 minutes long, the track takes the listener on a journey of uncertainty and conflict in the form of an incredibly easy-on-the-ear song. It’s a powerful way to end the album and it fits the theme the band have tried to create for this record nicely.Â
Boston Manor has done an amazing job with this album as it not only contains memorable songs of their own, it is an absolute joy to listen to the record from start to finish. The album sounds like a natural progression from the band’s earlier work while also showcasing their growth as musicians and individuals.
