EP Review: Crown The King – Groundhog Day

Crown The King are one of Ireland’s most exciting up-and-coming Pop Punk bands and the band will be hoping their debut EP ‘Groundhog Day’ will be able to see them capitalise on the hype they have built for themselves. Here are my thoughts on Crown The King’s ‘Groundhog Day’.

Opening track ‘Melissa’ wastes no time bringing the upbeat style of a Pop Punk release into the equation. Dan Gannon’s accent really allows his vocal delivery to stand out from the pact. More often than not, Pop Punk can sound very samey so his more unique vocal delivery is a breath of fresh air. On top of that, the riffs are extremely catchy and the song is paced perfectly. This song is well worth a spin!

Up next is the track ‘Running On Empty’ which is full of all the typical Pop Punk tropes fans have come to love. Relatable lyrics, beefy drumming and chugging major chords allow this song to feel unique yet slightly recognisable right from the off. As the song nears its end, the band have opted to put in a passage that will work perfectly in a live environment as the instrumental becomes much quieter and will allow fans to sing in unison back at the band.

Title track ‘Groundhog Day’ introduces a bit of angst to the EP with its use of more aggressive vocals matched with a heavier instrumental. Palm muted chords blended with a dominant drum track always makes for a good time and this song is proof of that. This song has so many great moments that will have fans headbanging along to its infectious beat.

Finishing off the album is ‘I Miss You (But I Don’t Feel Bad)’ which is pretty much exactly what you’d expect. A breakup track that is full of all the corny lines that will litter high school rockers books for years to come. Continuing with a heavier style while keeping the tempo high allows the EP to end with a bang.

Overall, I think Crown The King has released a really strong EP which shows just how much potential they have. If you are a fan of bands like Neck Deep or State Champs then I reckon these guys will be right up your alley. I’d highly recommend this to anyone who is a fan of modern Pop Punk.
