Album Review: Electric Callboy – Tekkno

Following their viral lockdown success with ‘Hypa Hypa’ from their 2020 album ‘MMXX’, Electric Callboy have been keeping up the energy by releasing great single after great single for their latest album ‘Tekkno’, and it’s fair to say fans are excited to finally get to hear it! Here are my thoughts on the latest work from the band.

What better way to kick off an album than with a track that will get the sweat pumping and your head banging! ‘Pump It’ is a highly danceable and very heavy track that captures both the bands musical capabilities and humour in one masterful song. It’s chorus is sure to live rent-free in your head for a few weeks whether you want it to or not, so to say it’s a little catchy is an understatement. You better leave those dancing shoes on however as ‘We Got The Moves’ comes waltzing in with a techno metal twist. Extremely bouncy and upbeat, the song encourages you to move like no one’s watching! Who knew metal could sound so god damn happy!

Following that is the track ‘Fuckboi’ which starts off a little calmer and proceeds to give off a more old-school Electric Callboy vibe musically while incorporating the band’s more humorous lyrical themes. The contrasting vocals provided via Conquer Divide really help to diversify the track and make it stand out that little bit more. The metal rave isn’t gone for long however as Spaceman brings the heat and the synth with a tonne of German engineering incorporated from FiNCH’s feature. Club music with explosive gutturals and power chords is a blend I never thought would work however it may be one of my new favourite things!

‘Mindreader’ is one of those songs that utilize the whole “calm before the storm” effect, as the intro is calm and subtle before exploding into a heavy mess. As the song progresses it delivers a variety of styles with the bands clean sounding crisp and clear while the gutturals pierce through the instrumental. On the other hand ‘Arrow Of Love’ starts how it means to continue. An upbeat track that is synth heavy and catchy as hell. The repetition may be a bit much for some however the music is just a blast to listen to!

Leaning heavily into the techno side is ‘Parasite’. When the track wants to get heavy, it gets heavy as hell, meanwhile the beat wouldn’t sound out of place being played within Berghain itself! Keeping the techno feel alive is ‘Tekkno Train’. Lyrically, this song is a fever dream and musically, it is tight, enjoyable and beefy. Ravers and moshers are going to party in harmony with this one!

The whole album is quite upbeat but ‘Hurrikan’ starts off a bit too boy bandy… before unleashing the heaviest twist the album has to offer. Pure pandemonium unfolds once this song drops and I am here for it every day of the week! Closing out the album is the track ‘Neon’ and it is a great culmination of everything that’s come before it. A more clean track that flows beautifully to its conclusion. Is there anything Electric Callboy can’t do!

There is a reason why Electric Callboy have seen an insane boost in popularity as of late and it’s the fact they have been able to produce some truly unique and amazing tracks and reinvent their image into one that is both enjoyable and memorable. This album is a massive step in the right direction and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for these guys!
