Album Review: Fit For An Autopsy – Oh What The Future Holds

Fit For An Autopsy are quite the name in the Deathcore scene so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that their fans have been eagerly anticipating their new album ‘Oh What The Future Holds’ ever since it was announced. Thankfully for them, the wait is over and I had to see what the band had in store for its fans. Here is my review of Fit For An Autopsy’s ‘Oh What The Future Holds’.

Opening the album is the atmospheric title track ‘Oh What The Future Holds’. A mostly sombre track that slowly builds up to a much heavier ending of the track. I think this eases the listener in perfectly and should be a great introduction for newer fans of the band. Following that is ‘Pandora. A heavy track that is more to the style existing fans of the band has grown to love. Melodic riffs ringing behind gnarly gutturals is something I think needs to be done more and Fit For An Autopsy always pull it off perfectly.

‘Far From Heaven’ is up next and its tremolo filled intro accompanied with a groovy percussion section will have you hooked right from the off. The song does feature cleans which I know is a touchy subject for the more “elite” Death metal fans however I personally welcome them as a great form of contrast to what is an already quite heavy track. Chugging riffs and a beefy bassline helps to elevate this track to that next level. Continuing the momentum, ‘In Shadows’ brings the heavy out. This is one of those songs that will have you banging your head without realising. It’s extremely infectious and really stuck with me after hearing it.

As the album progresses, you hear how the band can change up their style and I think ‘Two Towers’ is a perfect example of that. Once again, bringing out the cleans over a distorted instrumental before reintroducing the more brutal gutturals mixed with bullet-like blast beats shows just how diverse Fit For An Autopsy has become. ‘A Higher Level Of Hate’ has an intriguing intro. Utilising hand percussion to really change up the feel of the album, before unleashing a behemoth of a track upon the listener. This song marks the transition to a much heavier feel and I think more old school fans of the band will prefer the second half of this record without question. Bringing out a much more intense Deathcore feel, the track is a non-stop assault of brutal proportions.

Keeping the pace going is ‘Collateral Damage’. An extremely groovy yet heavy track that will have fans ready to leave it all in the pit when the band get to play this one live. The guitar work on display during this track is really the thing that helps the song stand its ground. On the other hand ‘Savages’ drumming track is something to behold. Utilising blast beats, syncopation and a plethora of ear-catching fills, This song will have any aspiring drummer listening on repeat to try and dissect what’s going on at any given time.

Unfortunately, the album cant go on forever but luckily the penultimate track ‘Conditional Healing’ keeps up the momentum of the album and unleashes a heavy number that has a surprisingly catchy feel to it. As the song transitions from a quick-paced rhythm to more of a beat down esc feel, the song never loses its flow. The final track will be polarising for fans, ‘The Man That In Was Not’ starts with more of a metalcore esc feel. Heavily focusing on the clean vocals before a sudden shift to the more heavy gutturals. If I had to compare this song’s style to anything, it would be down a similar vein of bands like Ice Nine Kills, changing from devilish gutturals to quite subtle cleans.

I personally really enjoyed this album. I think that Fit For An Autopsy has been able to show their progression off perfectly with this record and I have no doubt this will garner them a tonne of new fans. Keeping the essence of the band alive in the heavy natured sections while showing just how much they have improved technically with the more complect melodic implications. I highly recommend checking this release out as soon as you get the chance.
