Jackie is a band that pride themselves on being a little bit of everything and so far, it’s worked for them. Garnering a decent size fanbase since their debut onto the alternative scene back in 2020. ‘Hey Angel’ is the band’s latest release, and they will be hoping that it can replicate and improve on the success they found with their ‘New At Drugs’ EP release. Here are my thought’s on Jackie’s ‘Hey Angel’ EP.
Opening the EP is ‘My Best Years’, An optimistic track with quite a nice bounce to it. The melodies’ progression is subtle and is easy to listen to, while the instrumental compliments the subtle vocal style changes in a very pleasant way. Following on from that is ‘Love To Give’, a straight forward track that should appeal to fans of more mellow and chilled out music. Everything from its prominent bassline to the way the percussion has a slight swing helps to put the listener into a relaxed state. Opening the EP with two quite different styles of song is a bit of a risk, however I think it’s worked a treat here for Jackie.
‘Right This Time (Don’t Wanna Be)’ is up next, and I can’t help but feel that this song is missing something. Overall, the song is a decent entry to the EP, however it does feel a little bland in comparison to what’s around it. Maybe it’s just not for me, but the song struggled to stand out. On the other hand, ‘Leaving Tomorrow (Figure It Out)’ really captures the band’s style of soft and melancholy rhythms and melodies intertwining to create a unique listening experience. The song is comprised of basic chord progressions and simple vocal passages that flow together satisfyingly.
As the EP draws to a close, ‘Filter’ comes in with its oddly recognizable melody despite the fact you’ve never heard the song before. I can’t quite explain it, but it’s one of those songs you swear you’ve heard before even though you know you haven’t. Regardless of that, the song’s main attraction has to be its memorable chorus. I have no doubt fans will love singing this one along with the band when they eventually get the chance to. Finishing off the album is ‘I Can’t Forget The Feeling’. An extremely bouncy number that will have you nodding your head along to its infectious rhythm. It may not be the strongest track on the EP, however it does an amazing job bringing the whole record together.
Jackie’s ‘Hey Angel’ EP is a really strong release for the up and coming band. The release takes elements from a plethora of genres to create a more unique sound that is quickly becoming synonymous with Jackie’s music, and I think it works really well for them. They definitely won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, however, I strongly suggest checking them out if you’re a fan of more melodic driven alternative music.
