Lacuna Coil have made quite a name for themselves in the alternative metal scene and a big part of their success is their ability to deliver a stellar live performance. During the Pandemic, the band put on an inventive and unique live stream for their devoted fans to catch them in their element during trying times. This performance is now being released as a stand-alone live CD and offers an interesting look into their live sound. Here is my review of the unique ‘Live From The Apocolypse’ release.
Performing the entirety of ‘Black Anima’ in an altered order, this live performance saw 10 tracks make their live debut. With the absence of a crowd, the focus of this live album is purely on the band’s ability to deliver their melodic metal sound in a live setting. Tracks like ‘Apocalypse’, ‘Under The Surface’ and ‘Bad Things’ highlight Cristina Scabbia’s incredible vocal delivery while ‘Swords of Anger’, ‘Through the Flames’ and ‘Black Feathers’ allow Andrea Ferro to show off his immense and impactful gutturals.Â
Throughout the live show, the band sound impeccable with no noticeable mistakes sneaking through as far as I could tell. ‘Under the Surface’ sounds as close to the record recording as it possibly could which left me gobsmacked while the opening of ‘Veneficium’ sent chills down my spine as the choir-like intro set the song off in a way I wouldn’t have thought possible.
The real MVP of the live record is the final three tracks. ‘Layers of Time’ and ‘Black Anima’ make for an epic conclusion to the set with the band’s professionalism and talent being put on full blast for their fans. The slower and more methodical ‘Black Anima’ made for an awsome gateway to the second rendition of the bands track ‘Save Me’ to close out the show. Cristina’s vocals are something truly special and to hear them accompanied by Silvi Zanaboni’s gentle playing of the piano was spectacular.
This live album is unlike most, the feel of a concert is captured wonderfully yet the lack of a crowd is certainly noticeable. If you are a fan of the band or just a fan of melodic metal in general, I highly recommend giving this release a spin as it will get you that much more pumped for the return of live music in, what will hopefully be, the near future.
