Nascar Aloe may be a name you have never heard of before however he is certainly eager to change that. His new EP call’s you out in the title itself being called ‘Hey Asshole!’. Promising to bring out a new style of rock-infused hip-hop, this may just be what breaks out in 2023. Here are my thoughts on the EP!
Raw and unfiltered is the vibe the first track ‘Hey Asshole’ gives off. A very tinny-sounding guitar that almost sounds like it’s been recorded through one of those “beginner guitart amps” bundled in with a knockoff start seems very overpowering. Speaking of overpowering, the distortion featured during ‘Gameboy’ is next level. This is the kind of song that will blow out your speakers in a heartbeat. The retro esc videogame sounds are a complete contrast to the rest of the instrumental as well as the overly gained Vocals.
‘Disgrace’ dials back the mayhem a little and is a very unique yet enjoyable track. Simplistic yet effective at keeping the listener engaged, the song is basically split into two halves, the slightly groovy intro and the more sinister feeling second passage. It’s eccentric in nature yet I can’t help but want to hear it again. Unfortunately, ‘Drag Race’ is a little too over the top for me. The screaming vocal effects just completely overwhelm everything else and the instrumental is just not good on this one.
Of course, this album is jam-packed with an in-your-face attitude however the track ‘Don’t 4Get Da Name’ may just capture that feeling the best. Powerful and meaningful lyrics make the short track feel giant at times. Closing out the EP is ‘Ogre’ and the effects on this track play with the mind a little as it almost sounds like the song is being played backwards at times. This is such a wild listen and I really don’t know how I feel about it!
This EP is far from a masterpiece and to a lot of people I think this will be a hard pass however there is an element of quirkiness to the music. There will almost defiantly be an extremely dedicated fan base for a record like this but for me, I just can’t get behind the “Let’s sound out of tune to be cool” aesthetic.
