EP Review: Poppy – EAT

June 10, 2021 | Reviewed By

Poppy is back out of nowhere with a surprise EP release. The ‘EAT (NXT Soundtrack)’ EP has quite literally dropped without any warning and it’s already making a huge splash into the metal scene. I was surprised and impressed with her 2020 release ‘I Disagree’ so I am eager to jump right into this, so without any further delay, Here is my review of Poppy’s ‘EAT’.

Starting with a treat in the form of ‘EAT’, Poppy has embraced her heavier side and sounds like she has become a lot more comfortable performing screams herself. The song is full of aggression and features an infectious chorus that leaves a lasting impression on the listener. The style of instrumental has evolved a little from her ‘I Disagree’ album by becoming more distorted and much more abrasive.

Following that is the heavy-hitter ‘Say Cheese’. Full of distorted screams and a much heavier instrumental than anything Poppy has released before, the song is a breath of fresh air from the post-genre artist. Utilising her ability to create quite a haunting melody with her voice alone, her cleans complement the barrage of noise behind them.

High energy and aggression is a common theme in Poppy’s heavier tracks and ‘CUE’ is no exception. The use of syncopated rhythms and contrasting passages plays directly into her eccentric image and the more raw sound featured on this EP works surprisingly well for the former “Internet Girl”.

Dialling it back a bit, ‘Breeders’ is an interesting mix of ‘I Disagree’ and ‘Am I A Girl’ era Poppy. It’s clear that she is no stranger to completely changing things up, however it is great to see her still utilising everything she has available to her in her arsenal. This is probably the tamest track on the EP however I still have high praises for it.

The final track of the EP is ‘Dark Dark World’ and I think it tops off the insanity nicely. Layered vocals, and heavy distortion blended seamlessly with melodic passages, and precise drumming is a recipe for a memorable track. Hearing the quick changes from Poppy’s clean vocals to her distorted screams is quite impressive and I cannot wait for the chance to hear that live.

Poppy has completely knocked it out of the park with this EP. She continues her assault on the metal scene and is quickly proving those who doubt her wrong. This may be some of her heaviest work to date and it certainly is some of her best.
