From Pokemon to Frozen, Punk Rock Factory has explored the vast world of pop culture and put a punk twist upon it. Now it’s time for Musicals to get the Sausage Army treatment! It’s Just A Stage We’re Going Through will see the rambunctious band dabble in the world of the performing arts. Here’s what I thought of their efforts!
Kicking off your deep dive into the world of punky musicals is The Greatest Showman’s ‘Rewrite The Stars’ and right from the off you realize just how well Punk Rock Factory captures the beauty behind these tracks as well as adapts them in a way that makes them feel fresh and unique. A punchy and bouncy track to kick the album off really helps to set the mood for this Pop Punk party! Already a fan favourite, Hamiltons’ ‘You’ll Be Back’ is simply outstanding. The pop-punk aesthetic really lends itself to the comical track and it feels as if it is going to be one of those songs that send a crowd into complete pandemonium when the band get to unleash it upon a live audience.
Dear Even Hansen’s ‘Waving Through A Window’ is up next and the shining moment of this track has to be the guitar solo. It may be short but it’s an absolute belter and it transitions beautifully into the iconic ‘Did I Even Make A Sound’ moment of the track. If your looking for a more cheesy entry then Jersey Boys ‘December 1963 (Oh What A Night)’ is the track for you. A true classic no matter how it’s performed and Punk Rock Factory have done a stellar job of making this one feel just as iconic as ever!
Taking a bit more of a Wicked turn is the bewitching ‘Defying Gravity’. This song has so many style changes yet the band has crafted an outstanding rendition of the classic musical number, and I feel this song alone is a shining example of just how talented the boys are. Definitely give this one a spin! If rebellion and hope are your kinda motive then Les Miserables’ ‘I Dreamed A Dream’ will capture your heart and soul with its ridiculous catchy groove. If you want to girly dance to a rock sing then I think this may be the one to do it to!
The world-renowned ‘City Of Stars’ from La La Land is up next and this rendition brings a tonne of angst and attitude to the album. A beefy beat matched with sharp stabbing chords and an impassioned vocal performance makes this track one for the Mosh Pit crew! Every now and then there is a song that everyone is born knowing and ‘Mamma Mia’ is certainly one of those tracks. Does the song get better with a pop-punk attitude behind it, hell yeah it does! This track will be blasted at every Pop Punk Pizza Party in the future and we can all sing it until our voices burst!
The beginning of the end kicks off with A Star Is Born’s ‘Shallow’. The track that was originally performed by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper converts into one hell of a punk track. Everything from a catchy chorus to its quick and to-the-point nature feels perfect for the pop-punk treatment. Similarly, Greece’s ‘You’re The One That I Want’ seemed destined to become a bouncy punk track. This one gives off more of the early 2000s “Emo” punk but slaps just as hard as a track like AFI’s ‘Miss Murder’! Every musical has its climatic final track and Sister Act’s ‘I Will Follow Him’ is a stunning choice to sound out the final curtain. A much more delicate track to begin with, shows the depth the band has, however when the song kicks off the punk rock sound is breathtaking. If this was an actual musical this would get a standing ovation without question!
Theatre magic is hard to replicate in a recording however Punk Rock Factory may just be the wizards casting the spells! An absolute joy to listen to from start to end. The way the band can mould iconic tracks into their own blend of punk while keeping the integrity of said tracks in tack is simply astonishing. Wherever the future takes Punk Rock Factory, I’ll be along for the ride!
