Death Metal’s own Sanguisugabogg are here with their debut album Tortured Whole. The Ohio brutes have made quite the impact on the death metal scene with their debut EP ‘Pornographic Seizures’ and the new singles from the album seem to have gone down a treat with fans. I have been lucky enough to receive a review copy of their upcoming album so without further adieu, here’s what I thought of Tortured Whole!
It’s safe to say that the Sanguisugabogg is not planning on wasting any time easing you in. ‘Menstrual Envy’ has an incredibly intense feel to it. Disgustingly heavy riffs and filthy Squells from Devin Swank create that old school death metal style perfectly. A refreshing take on the genre for sure which continues into ‘Gored In The Chest’. A brutal head jerker that absolutely nails the style. The trashy sounding snare adds to the overall sense of chaos being created by the band. A very strong start to the band’s debut album.
Up next is ‘Dragged By A Truck’. A well-played song from a technical standpoint however it doesn’t pack the same oomph as the rest of the record. It’s by no means a bad song however it does come across as the weakest on the album in my opinion. This is then followed by a very unusual instrumental piece titled ‘Pornographic’. This is the first of two instrumental songs that really contrast from what you would expect from an album like this. It does however lead into ‘Dead As Shit’ really well! The nasty screech from Cameron Boggs’ guitar are awesome and the song as a whole absolutely decimates anything that came before it. Be warned tho, listening to this song will result in a very severe case of whiplash!
The title track of the record, ‘Tortured Whole’, doesn’t disappoint. A brutal song by every sense of the word. Everything falls into place really well and it results in an absolute beast of a song. If I had to pick one song to recommend to you, it would have to be this one without a doubt. ‘Interlube’ is the second ambient instrumental track of the record, and once again it completely breaks the mould of a death metal album, however it also flows into ‘Dick Filet’ surprisingly well. I can’t believe I’ve actually just written that sentence but the next song is indeed called ‘Dick Filet’! Sanguisugabogg clearly doesn’t care about the PC world that is transforming around them and is here to piss off everyone with vulgar names for even more vulgar songs. The sheer heaviness of this song shouldn’t be legal and it had me rocking out to it from the first listen. This is a highlight of the album for sure!
Coming to the end of the album, ‘Urinary Ichor’ is ok. It’s nothing that’s going to steal the show, but it fits the album well. A solid death metal tune that wouldn’t sound out of place in a playlist with Cannibal Corpse, and Carcass, however, ‘Posthumous Compersion’ would definitely be the better pick! A short and to the point song that comes in at 1 minute 5 seconds long, will leave any venue around the world in sheer disarray. An absolute juggernaut of a song despite its length. A great build-up to the final song ‘Felching Filth’ which doesn’t let you down. This filthy monstrosity of a song absolutely kills it! I cannot get over Cody Davidson’s ridiculous blast beats and fills. A must listen to for any drummers out there that’s for sure.
Sanguisugabogg has so much potential to become the next big thing in the death metal scene and with an album as strong as this being their first I’m sure they will live up to that potential. The future will be paved with gore and filth and I’m here for the ride!
