Brutality, carnage and filth are what makes a badass death metal album and Sepiroth have all three in bucket loads. The band from the Netherlands are back with their third album ‘Condemned to Suffer’ and I have to admit, I’ve been waiting for this release for a while now so I think I’m going to just jump right into it. Here is my review of Sepiroth’s ‘Condemned to Suffer’.
The mood is set with the ambience of ‘45362971N126375544E’ which leads you right into the brutal ‘Embedded Defect’. Disgusting gutturals and ear-piercing drumming dominates the track and leaves little to the imagination as the band leave it all on the line right of the bat. Musically, the band are extremely talented which gives them the ability to be a lot more memorable than most bands coming through the death metal scene at the moment.
‘Agonizing Subjection’ continues the insanity with a complete barrage of noise while ‘Six Times a Charm’ gives off a much more methodical vibe. The slower and more precise playing of this track works well and generates a much heavier feel while allowing squeals and gutturals to completely dominate the track before a collage of bullet-like beats come out of nowhere.
Continuing in the brutality vein, ‘Condemned to Suffer’ sees Sepiroth highlight just how good they are at delivering an insane amount of intensity. The song is constant blast beats and riffs before breaking down into a more beat down esc section while ‘Destined Between the Eyes’ falls a little short of the mark. The song just feels a little too repetitive for my liking and I think it’s the weak link of the album.
The ambience is once again created with the instrumental track ‘Psuedoscience’ before, once again, unleashing a monster in the form of ‘Selective Apocalypse’. This track contains some of the dirtiest gutturals to feature on the album and I could not get enough of the no-nonsense heaviness. You have to check out this track.
Drawing the album to a close is the stupidly heavy ‘Pulmarary Barotrama’. The way the song changes from breakneck pace to methodical battery is something that I will never grow tired of while the final track ‘River of Perdition’ is one of those tracks that will require ambulances present when this is inevitably dropped live. The sheer heaviness of this track has no right to be as awesome as it ends up being!
Sephiroth has managed to release one of the more memorable death metal album of recent times and some of these tracks really surprised me. The Dutch metalheads still have a lot of potential to improve and become even better than what they have managed here. I think the future is extremely bright for these guys.
