The Devil Wears Prada has made quite the name for themselves in the metalcore scene and fans have been eagerly anticipating new music ever since the band dropped ‘The Act’ back in 2019. It’s no doubt that the announcement of the ‘ZII’ EP has been met with excitement from fans and critics alike, so I just had to jump in on the action. So without any further adieu, here are my thoughts on The Devil Wears Prada’s ‘ZII’.
Screaming and distortion kick off the album and ‘Nightfall’ instantly has you hooked. The Devil Wears Prada waste no time in bringing the heat and this track is jam-packed with heaviness and aggression. Accompanied by the band’s knack of using contrasting melodic phrases, the song feels like it could become an instinct hit amongst fans. That’s one way of starting an EP!
‘Forlon’ is up next and it certainly doesn’t disappoint! This song will be one hell of a track for moshers and headbangers alike. A dominant beat is present throughout the entire track and it is emphasised by tremolos and riffs. The mix of cleans and guttural vocals once again feed into the band’s ability to incorporate contrast to make the song feel more diverse and memorable.
Blistering ‘Termination’ isn’t messing around and it’s clear to see why the song has already amassed over 650,000 streams on Spotify alone! Fans have been digging this track since it dropped and it’s clear to see why. The track feels like it’s in a league of its own and it’s by far the standout track of the entire EP. If you haven’t already checked this beast of a track out, I highly recommend doing so!
The penultimate track of the EP is ‘Nora’. The song boasts some of the heaviest section on the entire EP and blends it with a tonne of atmosphere and character. The band have a knack for incorporating different element from other genres to create a unique blend that has become synonymous to them. I think this track is a prime example of just what The Devil Wears Prada are capable of.
Finishing the EP is ‘Contagion’. The track starts mellow and quite surreal before unleashing a monster in the form of bullet-like percussion and impassioned gutturals. The track has a unique appeal to it that I can’t quite explain. It feels very Anthem like and I feel that it’s one of those tracks that will be best appreciated in a live setting, but until then, It still rocks.
Fans of The Devil Wears Prada are in for a treat with this EP. It’s a truly impressive release from the metalcore outfit and I think it may be some of their best work in recent memory. I highly recommend you check this out for yourself!
