Album Review: Venom Prison – Erebos

February 2, 2022 | Reviewed By

Venom Prison have been one of the most exciting death metal bands coming out of the UK for some time now and they have consistently managed to grow their audience with impressive live performances and strong music releases. With ‘Erebos’ potentially being their most anticipated album to date, I couldn’t help but check it out. Here is what I thought of their new album.

Setting the scene for the record is ‘Born From Chaos’, a heavy yet atmospheric number that does a great job of getting the listener in the mood for some heavy as hell metal. ‘Judges Of The Underworld’ wastes little time unleashing the chaos. Aggressive riffs matched by Larissa Stupar’s intense vocal delivery instantly hooks you in for the ride. The song has such a natural flow to it which makes it a real pleasure to sit down and listen too. Not to mention just how great some of the melodic guitar work is. Just brace your neck for the outro.

Following that is ‘Nemesis’, a No-nonsense track that keep’s the album heavy with its use of tempo changes and relentless drumming. Blast beats and bullet-like fills litter the song so if you’re a fan of heavy percussion, this is certainly a track for you. Keeping the momentum going is ‘Comfort Of Complicity’ and I’ve got to say this is one hell of a song. The melodic elements are a nice contrast to the carnage around them while Larrisa’s eccentric vocal delivery add’s so much depth to the song. There is just so much going on at once with this track and I’m down with all of it. A personal highlight for me is the harmonized guitars near the end of the track.

‘Pain Of Oizys’ follows and the introduction of clean vocals and a more tame instrumental to open the track are quite the surprise however I think they work really well. The contrast is quite surreal and when Larrisa reintroduces her scream, it really hits hard. This is certainly a new type of track for Venom Prison but I have no doubt fans will grow to love it. Opening with a more atmospheric feel, ‘Golden Apples Of The Hesperides’ fakes you into expecting a more tame song before launching an ambush on the listener. Rapid riffs matched with machine gun esc drumming allows this song to really hit home.

Continuing down the record and ‘Castigated In Steel And Concrete’ doesn’t let up. This track boasts some great chord progressions that will stick with you long after your first listen. The vocals are as hard as ever but they often harmonize with the higher notes of the guitar which makes for quite a pleasant albeit unexpected listen. Up next is ‘Gorgon Sisters’ which is one of my stand out tracks of the record. Brilliant execution of transitions topped off with an ungodly urge to headbang along to the track’s contagious beat allows this song to stand it’s own ground and really stick out from the pack.

As the album draws to a close, the penultimate track ‘Veil Of Night’ keeps the chaos alive and well with it’s enchanting blend of death metal and melodies. The guitar work is the real star of the show with this one as it holds the entire track together and gives the song a bunch of character. Finishing off the record is ‘Technologies Of Death’ which doesn’t disappoint. A solid track that really captures the feel of the record makes for a satisfying end.

Considering it’s only February, it may be a little early to start throwing around ‘Album Of The Year’ contender however ‘Erebos’ is one of the best releases from Venom Prison to date. The album showcases just how much the band have grown as people and musicians. Clearly unfazed about taking risks, the band have managed to pull off one hell of a record that I’m sure will take the Death Metal scene by storm.
