EP Review: Yours Truly – is this what i look like?

Yours Truly have been one of the hottest commodities on the pop-punk scene as of late with what seems like an unrelenting tour cycle that doesn’t seem to stop. On Top of this, the band announced their upcoming EP ‘Is This What I Look Like’ to a huge reaction on social media from fans. I couldn’t help but check out what all the hype was about so without any further delay, here are my thought’s on the new release.

Opening the EP is the track ‘Walk Over My Grave’. A high-energy pop-punk track that hooks you from the get-go. Everything from its explosive opening verse to its insanely catchy chorus screams Yours Truly so it’s no wonder that this track has already become a staple of the band’s live set. Following that is the track ‘Bruises’ which has a tasty feature from Stray From The Path’s Drew York. A more tame affair this time around however, what the song lacks in impact, it makes up for in danceability. It really is a feel-good track that gets the album off to a flying start.

It wouldn’t be a pop-punk release without a song full of the moody attitude that’s seen in ‘Careless Kind’. The vocal delivery is what make’s this song stand out from the pack as it does an amazing job of adding an extra layer of swagger to the already angst-filled number.

Title track ‘Is This What I Look Like’ serves as a transitional instrumental that adopts a more synth-filled style that flows perfectly into ‘If You’re Drowning (I’ll Learn How To Hold My Breath)’. This track is my personal highlight from the release. Its simplistic formula works wonders and makes for a really addictive listening experience.  This is only amplified by Josh Franceschi’s well-worked feature. Closing out the album is the single ‘Lights On’ which has already made a massive splash for the band.  It’s an extremely simple-to-learn track that encourages fans to dance like no one is watching as its contagious beat just comes across as an extremely bouncy one.

As a whole, the EP is a massive step in the right direction for the Australian rockers. It’s exactly what fans have been craving from the band as well as being extremely appealing to new listeners. After the year the band has had from performing at Slam Dunk and supporting You Me At Six, this is the cherry on top of the enormous cake for the band.
