Enforced Interview, We Caught Up With Knox Colby To Talk ‘Kill Grid’

Enforced have recently caught the attention of many metalheads with the release of their latest singles from the upcoming album ‘Kill Grid’, check out my review here. I have had the privilege of getting to interview their singer Knox Colby and it was a blast. Here is how the interview went!

It is my pleasure to be able to say that I am joined here with Enforced’s one Knox Colby! How have you been man?

I’m Doing great bud. How about you?

I’m doing well. So, with Kill Grid right around the corner for you guys, what can fans expect from this album?

Well, if they’ve heard the singles that have come out then they can expect a whole lot more of that. I think its a strong album. It’s real heavy and I think if you like what you heard from the singles, then your gonna like this album.

That’s great to hear! You mentioned the singles from the record and they seem to be doing really well in terms of streams and views don’t you think?

Oh yeah, it’s awesome to see. I remember seeing our Spotify listeners at around 2000 monthly listeners before they dropped and now there around 15,000. That’s insane and it’s great to see the videos doing well too. That’s gotta be a good sign.

That sounds awesome for you guys! If you could recommend one song of the album that isn’t one of the singles which one would it be?

It’s gotta be the first song on the record. The Doctrine. It’s a great song and it slams hard. It’ll be great to see how a crowd will react to this one.

Speaking of live music, Obviously, with the pandemic going on shows have been halted, but what are your plans for after the lockdowns are gone.

Well, I can’t really say too much but we’re hoping to be able to get out late fall or early wintertime. We hope we will hit Europe during the winter which would be awesome but obviously it all depends on if we can go out and tour. I think at the moment it looks like a week there but we have had offers for around 2 weeks which I’m totally down for, but I don’t know if the other guys are as down for that as me.

With the restrictions in place, did you guys find anything different when it came to recording the record?

Not really, no. The only thing different is probably how long it took. We had to work around everyone’s schedules and the restrictions definitely made it longer.  If we recorded this back when we recorded At The Walls, I reckon we would have had it done in about a week, however, it ended up taking us around 4 weeks to record it due to what’s been going on.

So ‘Kill Grid’ will be your first record released with Century Media. How has it been working with them for the first time? 

Awesome! It’s been really cool working with them. If we have an idea and we take it to them it’s never just a flat answer. They really allow us to work and experiment with things and it’s just been a great experience working with them for this record. There’s always a lot of back and forth and its good that we’re all honest and transparent about what’s happening. I can say that we’re not gonna turn into one of those bands that think they’re all that because they have signed for a major label.

Going back to the new album, what was the inspiration for the Malignance Music video?

The original idea was that Century (Media) wanted to do another visualizer – like we had done with Hemorrhage – but we’d already done that so we thought it would be cool to use some of our old live footage, that hadn’t been used, to make a video. We had to record some live takes of us actually performing the song as we haven’t performed it live yet and overall I think the video turned out pretty good.

So what was it like recording those live shots without a crowd?

I didn’t like them. The warehouse we recorded them in had these holes straight to the outside and we recorded them on a cold January day. It ended up taking us around 6 hours getting all the shots and I was absolutely freezing. There were plenty of takes where I’d look directly into the camera and things like that which you are not meant to do but without a crowd, it’s like your almost performing for the camera.

I guess it’s safe to assume that you guys aren’t planning any live stream shows then?

When this whole thing started we where all certain we would not do one. Like we were adamant, however things just didn’t get better and I know I’m probably talking the idea down in my head more but I think the possibility of doing one is a lot more likely now. We have had offers to do one so I guess we’ll have to see what happens down the road. It’s definitely gonna be odd though. You don’t get that connection and transfer of energy that you would normally get with a crowd. Like I would give 100% every night and then the crowd gives you it’s all which makes you want to go even wilder for them.

I have to ask, what’s the wildest thing that’s happened to you on tour? 

Ahh man, there are so many things! There are two that come to mind though. The first one was at a show we did with Occultist in this small bar called Banditos. Entry was free and the place got absolutely packed. Even the restaurant area was made into standing only and as soon as we started playing the place just went off. This wasn’t the sort of venue where people went crazy yet it got wild that night. It’s this tiny bar and people were losing their minds. The second one was that we performed a show inside this comic store. The place was tiny and there where 3 other shows happening that night in about a 4 block radius. The town was full of metalheads and as soon as we started playing the place was pure chaos. I remember people jumping off these ladder things to crowd surf and it was clear that we could basically do anything at that point. It’s safe to say we literally connected with the crowd that night.

That sounds insane! Would have loved to of been at one of those shows. Well, that’s all the questions I have for you. Its been great having you on here and I hope we get another chance for something like this again soon!
