Matt Heafy Reveals His Black Metal Project And Releases Debut Single

Trivium’s Matt Heafy has been teasing his black metal project for a while now and we can finally say that the wait is over!

‘Ibaraki’ is the name of the project and Emperor’s Ihsahn is also along for the ride with the release of ‘Tamashii No Houkai’ as their debut single.

This is what Matt had to say in regards to the release. “Tamashii No Houkai means ‘the breaking of the soul’ or ‘soul collapse’. It’s a Japanese term that didn’t exist before, but one we forged to reflect the song’s meaning. Tamashii No Houkai is co-written by Ihsahn – the legend behind Emperor and a musician who has been a longtime influence and mentor to so much that I do in music. The writing of this song was the turning point for IBARAKI – it summarised everything from the past, present, and future of what I thought black metal was, is, and could be.”

This project promises to be unlike anything Matt Heafy has done with trivium so don’t go into it expecting the harmony-filled riffs of ‘In The Court Of The Dragon’ and rather go in with a completely open minded.

The project started under the name ‘Mrityu’ however with the premise around the project shifting over time, a name change was in order as ‘Ibaraki’ better fit the new vision, Matt Heafy revealed on his stream over the summer of 2021.
