Rivers Cuomo Explains Why Weezer Are Releasing ‘Ok Human’ Before ‘Van Weezer’

Earlier in the month, Weezer surprised fans by announcing a new album, that’s set to come out before the already announced other album ‘Van Weezer’. Rivers Cuomo has now explained why the album (Ok Human) is arriving before band’s other album (Van Weezer).

Talking with NME, the frontman said that Weezer actually finished the more understated album before they received the offer to join Green Day and Fall Out Boy on the Hella Mega Tour that was set to take place in massive venues across the world. The band then realised that ‘Ok Human’ wouldn’t translate well to these huge stadiums and arenas, “We were like, ‘Okay, we just made the worst possible type of album you could make before a stadium rock tour” Rivers said.

Once realising the band got to work on the hair-metal stadium-rock-anthem filled record ‘Van Weezer’ – an album that the band believed would work much better live on the Hella Mega tour. Unfortunately, the Hella Mega tour had to be postponed – like many others last year – due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“So we were like: ‘Well, now we’ve just made the worst possible album for a time when you can’t actually tour or perform or rock out,” River added, “When nobody is going to concerts, how can you possibly promote a stadium rock album?”

Therefore, the albums were switched back, moving ‘OK Human’ – the “quirky, personal, non-commercial album with no big guitars” – forwards (to this Friday 29th Jan), and dropping ‘Van Weezer’ later in the year to coincide with the start of the global Hella Mega tour, which the frontman says, is seemingly still going ahead as planned right now.
